Hunting Annabelle Wendy Heard Books
About a quarter or third of the way into the book, I couldn't stand it any longer. Yes, I'm one of those who will flip to the back to see how it ends, then return to where I left off and find out how they got to that ending. Bottom line: This is one incredible, twisty ride! Sean is the perfect unreliable narrator. I actually liked the guy because, despite all the bad stuff, he so wanted to do the right thing. My issue was with Annabelle. Without trying to give anything away, I wish her character had been developed more deeply, that we the readers could have received more insight into how the events of her childhood and teen years affected her so the ending could have felt more organic (though I still loved it!). I felt these were missed opportunities and glossed over when Sean talked to certain people. Plus, I understand the focus of racism from small-minded, small-town folks, but that section didn't work for me on many levels. Sean should have been more angry at these people, at the racism, at so much more.
Lastly, there were a couple of spots not true to the era (1986). I know it must be difficult to write a novel from a specific time period like this without letting later slang and other things creep in. But as an adult who lived during that time reading this? Those things are jarring and a tiny bit disappointing.
Overall, though, a solid four to four-and-a-half stars for a great debut.

Hunting Annabelle Wendy Heard Books Reviews
One of my favorite reads of 2018! This book will get in your head. It's a true psychological thriller, with a masterfully-rendered unreliable narrator unlike any I've read before. Heard makes Sean sympathetic and compelling even when he's doing unspeakable things, and the story will keep you guessing until the final page. If you like dark and twisty books, you MUST read Hunting Annabelle!
Unreliable narrator, low-rent amusement park, mystery girl, worried mom—its all here. Wendy Heard can keep you turning pages. Can’t wait for more from her.
Holy sh*t ! This book was bizarre, violent, gothic, dark, twisted story but yet it was also a love story, a crime story, and a horror story wrapped into one. Personally, I loved it. It was right up my alley. Sean is basically misunderstood by everyone, and misdiagnosed. Yes he’s not totally a good person but he doesn’t seem to be totally a bad guy either. I actually disliked his mom more than him. Annabelle and Sean’s love story is sick, twisted, and toxic but I guess there’s someone out there for everyone right ?
The writer paints such a vivid picture of these characters, especially Sean. I can see the world through his eyes and it is a visceral and anxiety inducing ride that I am enjoying emmensly. I'm not done with the book yet, but I just can't stop reading. I can't wait to see what other books this writer comes up with...she's amazing!
About two-thirds of the way through Hunting Annabelle, I knew I’d found one of my new favorite characters. I also knew whodunit.
Then I kept reading, and I realized I had no idea who’d done it and was introduced to perhaps my new favorite character.
Hunting Annabelle by Wendy Heard is one of the best debuts I’ve ever read, certainly in the same conversation as Sharp Objects (Gillian Flynn) and Carrie (Stephen King).
Of course, by the time I’d settled on what I thought had been taking place behind the scenes, I had already gone through three hypotheses that did not work out. And even after the major reveal just before the climax, I still thought I knew what the next few twists would be.
I’ve never been happier to have been so wrong.
Heard’s protagonist, Sean Suh, is simultaneously unique and universal. Without giving away any spoilers, the young man was placed in a mental institution and diagnosed with schizophrenia after killing a girl as a teenager. His struggles with himself and his diagnosis center on something I think all people experience (certainly I do) the dark flashes, the momentary impulses, to do harm to others that have no root in rational thought. To protect others, he tries to avoid all contact by getting lost among the crowd at a fictional theme park in Austin in the mid-1980s.
But what’s a mentally ill murderer to do when he begins a loving, if obsessive, relationship with Annabelle, a young med student he’s just met? And then, what’s that same mentally ill murderer to do when she is kidnapped during their last “date?” The answers take us through Austin, a fictional small town in northeast Texas, and into the dark history of both Sean and Annabelle.
This novel is one of those rare stories that has completely unexpected (yet plausible) twists and is a ton of fun getting to them. Also, the stakes are raised and the characters become larger-than-life subtly, which is not easy to do for any novelist.
The story is set in my neck of the woods (Austin and The University of Texas), so there are a few details that momentarily took me out of the narrative, one of which is explained in the acknowledgments. These are pretty inside baseball for UT grads and those who’ve lived in the Austin area so it won’t matter for most of you. I also thought the 1980s pop culture references were a bit heavy-handed at times, but they did their job by reminding me early that this story is set in that time, which is why the characters were sometimes looking for telephones and twirling the cords with their index fingers.
And at no point did any of those small detractors make reading the novel less satisfying.
Gripping from beginning to end, I recommend Hunting Annabelle anyone who loves thrillers, especially those who enjoy being outsmarted by the writer.
Hunting Annabelle is available in paperback, ebook and audiobook wherever you buy your books. If that place is , here’s a link to the book’s page.
I loved this book. I read it in a single sitting and couldn't put it down. I usually don't try to figure out what's going to happen, but I couldn't help myself with this book. I kept coming up with new theory after new theory, and in the end... I was completely wrong. Twist after twist, but all totally plausible and believable. I loved that it was set in the 80s -- no cell phones! It made for a totally different book than it would have been had it been set in the modern era.
Sean, the protagonist, was a great character. A very flawed, imperfect, almost unlikable protagonist that was still lovable because he was *trying* to do what was right. He deeply wanted to be better. So, even though he was somewhat of a monster at times, I found myself rooting heavily for him.
All in all, this was a great suspense novel and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories with twists, dark psychological suspense, and unreliable narrators. I can hardly wait to see what the author publishes next!
